Hurricane Andrew
(The Better One)
By Henry Buck and Chris Fleming
When Hurricane Andrew first formed on August 16, 2002 it was only a mere tropical deppresion. By the time it had hit Florida it was a full fledged category 4 storm. First land contact was made on August 24 in southern Florida with wind speeds up to and including 175 mph. After devastating many cities including Homestead, Florida City and parts of Miami, Andrew moved westward over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, picking up speed and power. Two days after Florida landfall, Andrew again struck US coastline. This time it was weaker, with winds approximately 55mph slower than the initial Florida contact. After landfall in Louisiana Andrew quickly grew even weaker, turning northward and slowly regressing into a tropical deppression.
